Blessed Moments with Mahaswamigal

Sri Chitaranjan, a long time devotee of Mahaswamigal of Kanchi, remembers memorable moments when he was in His company.

RANJAN RECALLS HIS SACRED MOMENTS WITH MAHASWAMIGAL

My maternal uncle Nagai Soundararaj in Cuddalore used to be close to the mutt and sometimes I accompanied him on his pilgrimages. Once, on a fine day in seventies, he took me to Kanchi mutt. At that time, I did not have a good opinion about saints and sages. So I just accepted as usual the pant and shirt that he deposited with me before changing himself to dhoti and towel and waited in a corner, when he went to have a darshan of Mahaswamigal. That day, however, I was inquisitive about seeing the swamigal  at close quarters. When I saw him, I forgot myself and prostrated before him. He wanted to know my name and when I said `Chittaranjan', he asked what was meant by it. I did not know it and he explained, `It is Chitta and Ranjan or one who keeps his mind clean and beautiful'. Soon I was myself visiting the mutt whenever I chanced to get past Kanchipuram.

I was good at sketching and painting whatever attracted me then. I used to show some of my good drawings to Mahaswamigal and he used to appreciate them. He encouraged me, saying my eyes reflected the creative urge in me. Soon I started taking snaps of him, as photography was my another hobby then. On a particular Shasti day, I went to mutt to have his snap. Mahaswamigal was interacting with the crowd of devotees when I went for a snap of him, without his approval. He heard the camera click noise, turned to me and signaled to me to stop. I sort of ignored his instruction and went on clicking. Afterwards, upon developing the role, I was shocked to find that it was a wash out.

On a Thursday, I again went to see him but this time preferred to stay back and simply observe him and the crowd of devotees. Swamigal was fasting and was on mouna vratham. He retired to his room sooner than expected and I was disappointed. Still I waited outside the room, not willing to move. Time was ticking away but I stayed still between 8 AM and 1.30 PM. Surprisingly, he reappeared, sat in his usual place and this time signaled to me to take photos. I filled my role with his various photos, some 32 of them. My camera was an ordinary Rs 1000 camera but the frames, when developed, were full of life. All his photos were perfect and had a professional touch. Sri Savi Viswanathan heard about the photos and contacted me. He said his son Batcha had a camera worth Rs 30,000 and still did not have the clarity and details my snaps of Swamigal had and immediately arranged to have them in a cover story in the Pongal issue of Saavi, his Tamil weekly journal. (A scanned copy of the matter which appeared in the 20th Jan 1985 issue of Saavi can be seen along with this matter.)

I had the habit of wearing new set of dresses for Deepavali only after showing them to Mahaswamigal for some years when I was a bacherlor. I went to have his darshan, on a Deepavali eve, on one such occasion. It was pouring cats and dogs and the Mahaswamigal was then camping at some place in Andhra. When I went to have his darshan, it was 5 AM on the day of Deepavali. Seerkazhi Govindarajan was singing in the presence of Mahaswamigal. Smt M S Subbulakshmi and her husband Sri Sadasivam had also come to have his darshan. Seerkazhi’s song was followed by that of MS Amma. Valayapatti thavil vidwan was also there. Only 5 of us were there then. It was a memorable Deepavali for me, in the company of Mahaswamigal, MS, Seerkazhi and Valayapatti.

I would like to narrate another incident which happened after the siddhi of Mahaswamigal. I heard about Swamigal’ siddhi and rushed to Kanchipuram to have his darshan before he was to be interned in Januray 1994. There was a huge crowd and the solemn atmosphere also had some commotion. Some of us volunteered to control the crowd. The task went on till his body was interned. When I came out of the mutt, it was around midnight and there were no buses in the direction of Chennai. One hefty gentleman, who also volunteered in regulating the crowd, offered me a lift to Chennai. At the time of dropping me on Poonamalle High Road, he gave me his visiting card as a friendly gesture. Only on reaching home, I looked at the card and was stunned to find that it was none other than Sri T N Seshan, the Chief Election Commissioner! Mahaswamigal helped me in my safe passage to Chennai after he quit his body! Miraculously true!
